Top Interesting Facts about Lions should Now

Lion, as we all know it as the “King of the Jungle”, does live life king style (Although they are found in the planes and grasslands). Lazing around, being fed and sleeping for around 20 hours, the lion doesn’t has to worry about anything except protecting his kingdom. By kingdom, I don’t mean the jungle but the pride that the lion proudly owns. Lions, who were the second most widely spread species after humans, can now be found only in Africa and India these days. They were spread all across the Africa (even North) and Eurasia  (Greece to Southeastern Europe). Now, it is an endangered species as declared by IUCN.

Let’s read some wild facts about the King of the Jungle.
1. The beast!

This humongous male cat weighs around 180 kg (396 lbs) and the female around 132 kg (290 lbs) on an average but some male cats can weigh more than 250 kg (550 lbs) and the heaviest lion has been measured 313 kg (616 lbs).

2. Habitat

They are found in the sub-Saharan African desert and in the Gir National Park in India.  It is found in limited quantities in other Indian national parks as well, where the administration is trying to save the species from extinction.
3. Decline in population!

The species has been cutting half in number, every twenty years, after the half of the twentieth century since firing methods have been invented and used to kill them.

4. Age and survival

The male lion on an average lives for 14-15 years. The fights with the rivalry lions or predators to protect their pride or prey leaves the male lion in the wild vulnerable to bad health, due to which they live 5 years lesser as compared to the captive lions.
5. Lazy Royal Lion

The lionesses hunt for preys in groups as they are more agile, swift and light than the lion. They have support from one another and the lion comes to their support in case there is a bigger prey or in case he needs to protect them. Lion gets to eat first and hence the most.

6. The epic apex!

Lions are apex keystone predators, meaning that there is no other animal that would prey on a lion or kill it for food. Other predators might try scavenging and put a fight to steal the prey.
7. Scavengers

Even lions obtain 50% of there food by scavenging depending on the opportunity. They would either eat on the dead food that they find in the wild or steal it from other predators like hyenas etc.
8. Hunters of the night

Like other big cats of the genus panthera, lions usually hunt in the night. Their eyesight is six times more vulnerable than humans, which gives them a very strong night vision, giving them an advantage over other animals. Occasionally, they might hunt in the twilight.
9. The logo perfect lion

Lion is the most distinctive of all the big five cats as it is the only one that has such dominant sexual dimorphism. This means that the male looks distinctively different than the female. In this case, it is the mane of the Lion that gives the gender identity to the lion. It has been used in so many pictures, paintings, sculptures, engravings and even flags. Some of the references that have been found from Lascaux Chauvet Caves, date back to as long as 17,000 years.
10. Leo

The name lion is derived from the Latin word Leo. The word leo is often used in astrology to denote lion in many cultures and countries.
11. Eight great species

Based on  size, shape, mane, face, behavior and habitat, they are distinguished as eight species.
12. How the Hybrids?

The lion mate with other members of the genus panthera family. There offspring with tigers are known as “ligers or tiglons”. Hybrids with jaguars are called “jaglions” and leopons with leopards.

13. The cute cubs

The lion cubs are born with rosettes on their skin like leopards have. They are born blind, start crawling, within in one or two days and start walking around after about three days. The mother keeps shifting the cubs several times in a month to keep them safe. She picks them up from the nape of their neck and shifts to another place, so that their smell wouldn’t linger around for the predators to smell and attack the cubs.
14. Colors

Lions are of different colors and it can vary from light buff to yellowish, reddish, or brown/dark brown.
15. Judge it by the mane!

The mane says a lot about a lion’s health. The color, the size, the density of the mane is related to the genetic precondition, sexual maturity and the testosterone production. The rule of thumb is, darker and fuller the mane, healthier the lion. The lioness prefer lions with a darker and a fuller mane.
16. The pride of a lion!

The resident lions live with related lionesses and their offspring in a pride. There are around five to six females and normally two lions that mate with the adult females. A pride as big as of 30 members has been seen too. Some females might leave the pride and become nomadic, but usually the females in a pride change with death or birth. Number of males might increase to four before it comes back to two. Lions leave their maternal pride once they reach maturity around 2-3 years of their age.
17. Nomads!

This is the second type of organizing behavior. The males sometimes leave the pride and live alone or with a group of male lions. It is a rule with the lions that they become a nomad at least once in their lives.
18. Entry and exit from a group

This behavior might change with time and the nomads may want to join back with the pride. They might have to face a little difficulty to get back in the pride. It is even harder for the female nomads to join a group because the females are related and they might not want to let the unrelated female to join the group.
19. Pride and Range

The area occupied by a pride is called the pride area whereas, the area of nomads is called a range.
20. Roles and responsibilities

Generally, the male defends the pride and the females hunt and raise the cubs. The roles are divided among the pride members according to their strength and capability. The stronger the lion, safer the pride. The strongest lion has the best female ranking. The lion has to defend its pride to save his relationships.
21. Quick but not athletic

The lion can run up to 50 mph (80 km/h) for a short distance as it lacks stamina. There heart is only 0.54% of its body, whereas a hyena’s heart is 1% of its body weight.
22. The competition

The lions have competition too. Other predators like hyenas can give lions a run for their food sometimes. Lions steal preys from hyenas but sometimes it can happen the other way round too. Hyenas wait at a distance of around 30-100 m and wait till the lions are done. But, they can also bravely eat alongside or even take it from the lions.
23. The dominating cat

Lions dominate the other smaller cats like Cheetas and leopards. They also kill the cubs of the Cheetas and Cheetas have 50% chance to loose their kill to Lions.
24. The Maneaters!

The lions don’t usually hunt humans but some lions (mostly males), do hunt human beings sometimes. The reason could be a weak jaw or decreased ability to hunt animals but it is not supported by all researchers. The more likely cause would be the decrease in the number of the prey animals. As they are unable to find animal preys in the human-dominated areas, lions start to feed on humans.
25. Reproduction

Most lionesses start reproducing as soon as at four years of age. There is no particular time for the lions to mate but the lioness mates only when it’s in heat. The female might mate with more than one lion. The average gestation period for a lioness is 110 days and it gives birth to one to four cubs in a secluded den.
26. Rooaarr!

Lions have the loudest roar that can be heard from a distance of 8 kms. They do this to display their presence or to inform the pride members.
27. Communication

Lions communicate with other members with touch, voice and expression. They rub heads and necks in order to comfort others. This has been seen when a separated member of the pride comes back. The male rubs the male and the female rubs the female and the cubs. They make different forms of voice gestures  like roaring, meowing, woofing, hissing, hushing and snarling.
28. At it’s toes

The lion’s heels don’t touch the ground while walking.
29. The War Diety

Lion is symbol of strength and courage, royalty and stateliness and power and fierceness. Ancient Egyptians used to respect lions as there war deities because of it’s powerful and fierce nature.

Mom Allowed 4-Year-Old Boy to Be Tossed Off Washington Bridge ‘for Fun’

http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1545223/fawley-video-boy-tossed-off-bridge.jpg

Officials are investigating after a 4-year-old boy was recently thrown off a bridge into a river in Montesano, Washington.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Devonshire Bridge over the Wynochee River in Montesano last week after bystanders witnessed the boy being thrown off the bridge and called police.
WARNING: The video is graphic and contains strong language

The boy survived the fall. It was not immediately known if he suffered any serious injuries.
Brianna Jones, who witnessed the incident, told The Washington Post the child’s head almost hit a steal beam in the fall, and that he was screaming when he surfaced.
His mother, she said, tried to make it seem as if the whole thing was “fun.”
“We all started freaking out and yelling at her, ‘You can’t do that!” Jones told the Post. “She said, ‘He’s my kid, and it’s none of your business.’ If that happened out in the open, you can only imagine what’s happened to the kid behind closed doors.”
“You just don’t throw a kid off a bridge!” she added. “It made me so mad. … People like that shouldn’t have children.”
Deputies interviewed witnesses and the boy’s mother. Deputies said Saturday they’ve recommended the Grays Harbor Prosecutor’s Office charge the boy’s mother with reckless endangerment and another man with reckless endangerment and criminal trespassing.
All of the charges are misdemeanors, deputies said. Child Protective Services has also been notified of the event.
Kaylub Fawley posted video of the boy being thrown to his Facebook page on Thursday, writing, “This is what happens when some parents just don’t care…this is a woman me and all my friends witnessed letting a ‘stranger’ throw her 4 1/2 year old son of the bridge yesterday into the water for fun!!”
In an interview with The Post, Fawley explained that he made the footage public to inform others on the consequences of endangering children.
“I hope that mother gets what’s coming to her,” he told the newspaper. “I just want that child to be safe.”

10 Ways Watching TV Is Killing You

As much of a national pastime as baseball, television has become ingrained in US society. However, there are a number of detrimental effects which researchers have uncovered. Here are ten ways that watching TV is killing you.

10 Gives You High Cholesterol

istock_21010980_small

A 1990 study at the University of California, Irvine, studied the cholesterol levels in children, investigating whether or not watching TV or playing video games had an effect. What they found was shocking: Children who watched more TV had elevated cholesterol levels; those who sat in front of the television for four hours a day were nearly four times as likely to suffer from heart disease later in life.
The reasons for the elevated levels were that the children who watched television were more likely to eat an unhealthy diet and rarely exercised. (The study mostly followed white middle-class children.)

9 Makes You Violent

istock_19421374_small

In 1960, Professor Rowel Huesmann began a study, trying to document the effect of media violence on children. Ten years later, Huesmann and his team found an indisputable link between media violence and actual violence. Children who were exposed to it were more likely to behave aggressively than those who weren’t.
While people may disagree as to whether or not media violence is a “public threat,” the correlation is said to be similar to that of smoking and lung cancer. Not everyone who smokes gets cancer, just like not everyone who watches violent media becomes violent, but it is a contributing factor.

8 Makes You Dumber

istock_2776903_small

A Johns Hopkins University study led by Dina Borzekowski found that children who watched more than two hours of television a day, especially those with a TV in their own rooms, scored significantly lower on standardized tests than their counterparts. (The study also found that having a computer with Internet access actually increased the scores.)
Also, a New Zealand study discovered that children and adolescents who watched the most television attained the least amount of educational success. Around 1,000 babies were chosen at random and were followed until they were 26 years old. Those who watched less television were more likely to graduate both high school and college.

7 Lowers Your Sperm Count

Published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, a study by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health concluded that men with a sedentary lifestyle, especially one with prolonged television watching, had sperm counts 44 percent lower than men who spent little time in front of the TV. The threshold for the lower sperm count levels was 20 hours per week. (That may seem like a lot, but it’s less than three hours a day.)
Conversely, men who exercised at least 14 hours a week had the highest sperm count. Note that the quality of the sperm itself (i.e. motility and shape) remained unaffected. When asked why television was singled out, Jorge Chavarro, the senior author of the study, said the following: “One of the important mechanisms appears to be TV watchers are exposed to commercials for food. That makes you hungry and eat more.”

6 Turns You Into A Criminal

istock_23904518_small

A research study conducted by a group of British researchers looked at a sample of more than 11,000 children born between 2000 and 2002 and found that those who watched at least three hours of television per day were more likely to engage in antisocial activities such as bullying or stealing. However, when looking at children who played three or more hours of video games per week, no statistical link was found.
One of the reasons put forth for why television could be responsible for the increased risk of criminal activity later in life is that violence plays a prominent role in much of what is aired, which is what a New Zealand study of over 1,000 people concluded. The study stated that the average rate of violent incidents per hour is eight, with children’s programming (cartoons or otherwise) containing even more violence.

5 Lowers Your Odds Of Surviving Colon Cancer

istock_66879895_small

A study of more than 1,500 people who underwent treatment for colorectal cancer concluded that those who watched more television before their diagnosis were much more likely to die within five years than those who watched a moderate to nonexistent amount of television. However, there was no appreciable link between patient mortality and their post-diagnosis television habits.
A separate study, conducted by the US National Cancer Institute, examined over 566,000 people and showed a relatively strong link between television, exercise, and patient survivability but couldn’t prove a causal relationship. According to Hannah Arem, the author of the study: “The risk of dying from colorectal cancer was higher among the individuals who watched more TV [ . . . ] but the associations were not statistically significant.” However, they did conclude what most of these studies do: Some physical activity is better than no physical activity.

4 Inhibits Sleep

istock_91262865_small

In a joint study between MassGeneral Hospital for Children and the Harvard School of Public Health, researchers wanted to examine the effects of a number of different factors during pregnancy and early childhood. The following criteria were examined—how much time an infant was in a room with a running television, how much time older children spent watching television, and whether or not children slept in a room with a television in it.
What they discovered was that each hour of television watching contributed to seven fewer minutes of sleep, and having a television in the bedroom contributed to 30 fewer minutes of sleep. (It also seemed to have a stronger effect on boys than girls.) A similar study in Spain showed that a nine-year-old who watched a minimum of five hours of television per day got one hour less of sleep than an equivalent nine-year-old who watched a maximum of one and a half hours.

3 Decreases Language Development

While it’s not a risk the readers of this list have to worry about for themselves personally, two different studies have shown that the more time babies spend in front of a television, the more slowly they learn to talk.
One study, conducted by the Seattle Children’s Research Institute, followed more than 300 children. They were fitted with audio recorders, which were worn continuously for 12 to 16 hours. It was observed that each hour of television contributed to a significant decrease in the amount of words the babies heard (a decrease of 770 words per recording session). This in turn decreased the amount of vocalization done by the babies, stunting their growth.
A similar study concluded that babies learn better from a live conversation. When nine-month-old US babies were introduced to a Mandarin speaker, they showed an ability to tell the difference between certain speech sounds after only 12 sessions. However, when they were placed in front of a television and shown a recording of Mandarin speaker, they were unable to show any enhanced ability.

2 Makes You Drink More

istock_73575795_small

A joint group of scientists from the Netherlands and Canada collected 80 young males, aged 18–29, and put them in a number of different groups and had them watch television with varying degrees of alcohol consumption on screen. The study found that people drank an average of 1.5 more bottles of beer or wine when watching movies or commercials which heavily featured alcohol than those who watched ones which did not.
Though the study’s authors admitted they didn’t find proof of any long-term change brought on by the television watching, the short-term effects were undeniable. Rutger Engels, one of the researchers, said that “it might work as a cue that affects craving and subsequent drinking in people who are drinkers.”

1 Kills You Early

istock_18306876_small

A study of the television habits of Australians concluded that watching television can dramatically reduce lifespan. The researchers behind the work showed that watching six hours a day can take 4.8 years off your life. Also, every hour of television watched after age 25 decreases life expectancy by 22 minutes.
In a related study performed by the Harvard School of Public Health, scientists concluded that more than three hours per day of television, or similar sedentary activities, increases the chances of premature death by 13 percent (usually via things like diabetes or cardiovascular disease).

10 Creepy Rituals We Once Used To Celebrate Halloween

By our best guesses, Halloween may be older than Christianity. In those days, it was a Celtic pagan festival called “Samhain,” a time when the barriers between the land of the living and the dead blurred.
Little is recorded of how Samhain was celebrated, and so we’ve had to gather what we know from legends and secondhand accounts. The details paint the picture of some dark and unnerving rituals and of something very different from the holiday we celebrate today.

10   The Ritualistic Murder Of Kings

In the bogs of Ireland, dead bodies have been found, still perfectly preserved. Their skin is covered in a thick layer of black peat that has kept the flesh from decomposing. The faces they wore in life are the same today, hundreds of years after their death, and even the hairs on their heads are still intact.

Many of the bodies aren’t there by chance. Archaeologists believe that these bodies are the remnants of a ceremonial sacrifice. Clothes and grooming reveal that these dead were of the ruling class, fitting into legends about the ritualistic murder of kings committed on Samhain.

If the year was a hard one, tormented by plagues or famines, the people would hold the kings responsible. The failed king would be sacrificed and replaced, and his body would be thrown into the bog.

9  The Rise Of The Dead

2

On Samhain, it was believed that the doors holding in the world of the dead would open. Dead loved ones would wander out into the world of the living, often trying to make their way back to their homes.

In some places, they took pity on the dead. They would leave food outside the door to feed the passing ghosts or even leave their doors open and prepare a place for the dead to rest.

Not all the dead were so peaceful, though. One Irish legend says that, when the portal to the dead opened, a creature called Aileen would emerge from the otherworld and burn the town of Tara to ground every Samhain. In some place, in fear of these spirits, the people would spend Samhain with their doors locked shut, afraid to step outside.

8  Fortune-Telling

3

During Samhain, people would call upon spirits to tell the future. There were some strange rituals performed during the holiday, meant to let people know if prosperity or misfortune awaited them, most of which were described as “spells.”

Some were fairly innocent. In one, for example, girls would hide beside a neighbor’s house. They would fill their mouths full of water, holding a pinch of salt in each hand, and listen in on their conversations. The first name of an unmarried man, they believed, would be the many they married.

In another, men would open the doors of the barn and mime letting down corn against the wind three times. After the third time, a spirit would pass through the barn, taking the appearance of the position they’d hold in adulthood. Boys were encouraged, though, to take the hinges off the doors or else the spirit would never leave, staying behind to torment them.

7  Fairies Kidnapped People

5

During Samhain, fairies would leave their homes and roam the world of the mortals. That might sound like a magical moment, but these fairies weren’t Tinkerbells. They were horrific monsters, and this was one of the most terrifying parts of the holiday.

The fairies, led by the King of the Dead, would ride on storm clouds with an army of hellhounds to gather the newly dead. During Samhain, though, they were less discriminate. Sometimes, they would pull the living along with the deceased and drag them to the afterlife.

On the day of the festival, people would stay clear of fairy mounds, the hills that dot the Irish landscape, fearing that one would catch them if they strayed too close and pull them down into hell.

6  The Creatures Of The Cave Of Cats

6

The most dangerous place of all during Samhain was Oweynagat, the Cave of the Cats. This was a narrow hole dug into a hillside. According to legends, the Fairy Queen had stopped there centuries before, and her maidservant had been so taken with the place that she asked to live there. Since then, the place had been overrun with malevolent spirits.

People in the medieval times wrote countless notes claiming that they’d seen monsters crawl out of the cave. One said that the apparition of a woman came out every year and took away nine of the best animals from every herd. Another said that strange beasts would emerge from the cave, and another that demonic cats were set loose during Samhain to attack the people in the town below.

5  People Drank Heavily

4

A major part of Samhain was getting as drunk as humanly possible. Samhain marked the last great harvest before winter, and grain would be taken in en mass before it was ruined by the frost. The people, as a result, would have a huge surplus of alcohol, and since refrigeration didn’t exist yet, they either had to use it or waste it.

People drank incredibly heavily during Samhain. Getting drunk was so linked with the festival that every single ancient Irish story about drunkenness takes place during Samhain. There are whole legends, like “The Intoxication of the Ulstermen,” that use people getting hammered during the festival as the inciting action or even as the whole focus of the story.

4  The Black Sow

7

Fire was a major part of the festival. People around the country would light fires in their homes during Samhain, but the details of this ritual varied from place to place and in some areas involved some dangerous and dark customs.

In Moray, boys would go door-to-door begging for “peat to burn the witches.” They would make a great fire and lie down as close as they could to it without getting burned, letting the smoke billow over their bodies. Their friends would then leap over them and through the smoke, believing that the ritual gave them magical protection.

In parts of Wales, people would jump over the fire and run away, imagining a creature called the Black Sow would take the slowest runner. According to J.A. MacCulloch, this was a toned-down version of an older ritual. In the past, he claims, they would catch one of the runners. The victim would “’laden with the accumulated evils of the year” and throw him onto the bonfire as a human sacrifice.

3  People Dressed Up As The Dead

8

Costumes were a part of Samhain, just like modern Halloween. In those days, though, nobody dressed up as a superhero—they dressed as the dead. People would paint their faces black and put on disguises made out of straw, believing the clothes would make the spirits who roamed the earth believe they were one of them.

Others put on the skin of freshly slaughtered animals. Samhain was a time when masses of animals were slaughtered to stock up for the winter, and the first sound that marked the beginning of the celebrations was the squeals of dying pigs. To avoid the touch of the wandering dead, people would take animals skulls and skins and fashion them into demonic-looking costumes.

2  People Cross-Dressed

9

It wasn’t just the line between living and dead that blurred. Somewhere along the line, people started using Samhain to blur the lines between genders, too. Samhain, and later Halloween, were celebrated with men in drag wandering the streets.

By the mid-19th century, most groups that went door-to-door on Halloween predominantly consisted of men dressed as women—“hags,” as they were called in Wales. These hags would knock on people’s doors and ask for food or hospitality.

If a home was particular dirty, the men dressed as women would come inside and start sweeping, humming “mum-m-m” as they worked like a disapproving wife.

1  Child Sacrifice

10

In the earliest of days, Samhain may have been a time of child sacrifice. Irish legends talk about a time when gods demanded sacrifice during the festival. One legend says that the people had to give up two-thirds of everything they owned at the beginning of winter, including their corn, their milk, and their children.

Another article, written by a Christian monk, claims that at a place call Mag Slecht, there was once an idol to the deity Cromm Crauch. According to the monk, this altar was used to sacrifice children during Samhain.

“They slew their hapless firstborn with much wailing and peril,” the monk writes, “to pour their blood around Cromm Crauch.”
